Chapter Sixteen
Merkote stands before me bent with old age, as he portrayed himself in my youth. His hair has managed to become unruly and white where it once was silver. His eyes hold the gentle look I wanted to cling to in my memories of him before he confessed his betrayals. Other than his skinâs unnatural pallor, itâs as if I have stepped back in time and have erased all these past years.
âHow?â I whisper with shock, waiting for the anger over what she has done to surface.
Morlena walks around the man with an appraising expression, arching one brow as she stares to find imperfections with her work. âI decided to keep him around since Keyrah put all that effort into bringing him back for us,â she tells me. âHeâs proven to be very useful.â
Merkote was once a proud man, hateful of my auntâs ego and insulting undertones. Yet now, he stands, staring at me with not even a flinch of aggravation upon hearing her comment. For a brief moment, thereâs a flicker of light in his eyes, but itâs gone before it can be anything other than a spark.
âWhat have you done to him?â I ask, feeling instantly ashamed of speaking of him as if he is not standing right in front of me.
âMade him useful,â Morlena states, arranging Merkoteâs hair as if he were a doll to pose and play with. âHeâs going to get us out of this whole mess. Well, he and another.â
As if some secret code word was uttered, Kurt steps into the small patch of light. His throat is still a raw wound. The blood he spilled still stains his armor and the one side of his face where he laid in the growing pool of it. Despite my auntâs best efforts, his eyes still burn with their hatred telling me exactly what he wished his throat would allow him to say to me.
âHow is this going to help us?â Iâm shocked, stunned and almost wordless with her debauchery.
âOh, right,â Morlena says offhandedly, as if just remembering some small fact which annoys her. âYou see, Kurt is going to kill Phenelope. Then you are going to kill Kurt, again. Of course, weâll make sure to make a grand scene of it all.â
âI see youâve finally gone insane, too?â I ask her still trying to understand her ideas, or at least what she is thinking.
Morlena curves her black painted lips with amusement. âIf I had, I would have already killed you myself instead of letting my pets have all the fun.â She flashes me a look of caution, to not test her patience. âYou are right to think no one would believe you killed your own daughter. We will have to have a scapegoat, and since that little frail heart of yours would never allow someone to volunteer for such a thing, I found someone already dead to do it.â She grandly gestures to Kurt. âSince everyone is one whisper away from thinking my pets will be our downfall, the act will be bought.
